With great sadness I will be unable to run a viable B&B business this year, given the restrictions for Covid-19. I will therefore be running the B&B as self catering only, for groups, letting out the whole house. In the meantime I will be setting up a B&B co-operative to support independent B&Bs recover over the next few years, in the face of the stranglehold of the big booking agents. If you have stayed here before do please contact me and I'll do my best to accommodate you if I can, or for any general enquiries - I will do my best to help you find somewhere, if not here.

A luxury bed and breakfast in Somerset.

Newchester Farmhouse B&B is a peaceful place to stop off on your way further south, or explore a beautiful and little known part of English countryside. Set in south Somerset, with plenty to do around, the B&B was set up to offer a relaxing place to unwind, with beds that allow a deep and gorgeous slumber. We’re close to Yeovil, Taunton, Crewkerne and Ilminster, neighbouring both Devon and Dorset. There’s seaside trips both north and south, lovely walks and exquisite houses and gardens practically on the doorstep.

The B&B has three superking rooms, all with showers, two with roll top baths. The beds are handmade by Norris Bedding. There is a guest sitting room for cool and calm in summer, cosy wood fires in winter.

The focus here is on comfort and food. I aspire to tidiness, but when timing is tight, I tend to make a cake rather than trim the edges of the flower beds.

I opened in summer 2018. The house was redesigned to enlarge the bathrooms and improve the hot water and heating. The next project is the garden. At the moment I’m watching to see what is happy growing where before I plant it up for colour, wildlife and hen friendliness.

We are a dog-friendly bed and breakfast in Somerset. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the B&B, but only in the Garden Room, so I do need to know in advance if you are hoping to bring a dog, in case of overlapping other dog bookings or an issue with other guests and allergies.

Somerset is a deeply dog loving county, so many local pubs welcome dogs. There are footpaths galore for walking. In high summer some town beaches ban dogs from central areas, but I can give you maps showing the nearby dog-friendly beaches – we are just over half an hour from Bridport, and 35 minutes from Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast, both beautiful places for long dog walks and fish and chips, though nearby there are wonderful places for dog walking across fields and through woods.

I prefer to offer locally sourced food for our breakfast. Bread is usually home-made. Eggs were provided by our (very) free-range hens, but the badgers have ended that luxury, so for a while we will be sourcing eggs, and much of the fruit and veg, from neighbouring farms.
Wherever we can we build a relationship with local suppliers. There are a great number of small businesses in Somerset, Dorset and Devon who care about the quality of their produce and the welfare of their animals.
It’s a challenge to run an elderly house environmentally, so we try where we can. I avoid the dryer where possible, so I’m afraid that towels are rarely fluffy, but they do dry well, which is some consolation.

‘The perfect setting with a beautiful garden, hugely comfortable rooms and a lovely and thoughtful host. Highly recommended.’

We are  a rural B&B set on the edge of a village close to the main routes for the South West – the M5 and the A303. Lyme Regis is 35 mins to the south, Bridport 45, Yeovil is 15 minutes east on the A303 and Taunton (M5) is 25 minutes by car. We’re both a good stopping off point for the road to deepest Cornwall or Devon, or a good base for exploring the area and neighbouring Dorset and Devon.

Crewkerne station, on the London to Exeter route, is only 12 minutes away. Taunton station, with links to Bristol and London, is 25 mins.

I can help with taxis or transport from any of the stations if you let me know in advance.

Check in is between 4 and 9 pm, but if you know you’d like a different time, or you’re likely to be running late, please just email or give me a call. I’m happy to be flexible, but I need to know in advance wherever possible.

Check out is between 7 and 11 am. Payment is on departure, but I take card details on booking for security.

Again, if you know you need to leave early or late, please just ask.

Business rates are available, so please call to discuss.
